The warmer weather is something we look forward to after such a long winter and no doubt we have a long list of jobs to do to get ready for it. What about your central air conditioning system? Is that on your to do list? Having yearly maintenance done on it by a professional is an important step to keeping it in good order, but what can you do as the homeowner to ensure your central air conditioning system is working efficiently? Here are a few simple ideas:

Clean or replace the air filter. A dirty air filter will greatly reduce the quality of air inside the home, it can also put a strain on the motor. Have a regular check of the air filter, especially when it is in constant use and give it a good clean or even replace it.

During a long winter all sorts of dirt and debris accumulate in and around the outside condenser unit. Clean this area by removing leaves, foliage and spider webs etc. Remove the cover of the unit and clear any debris. You will notice that behind the cover the unit is made up of coils of piping surrounded by many metal “fins”. Make sure this area is clean and that if any of the fins are bent you straighten them. You can do this with a tool called a fin comb.

Oiling the motor is a good idea but look at the air conditioning systems manual first to determine the type of oil you should use.

In order for condensed water to drain away from the unit itself, drainage lines are attached to it. These lines can sometimes become clogged which can become hazardous. Have a check of these drainage lines and make sure they are not blocked, are in good condition and that they fit securely to the unit.

Yes, although you should have a professional inspect your central air conditioning system every year, there is a lot you can do to maintain it yourself so that you can be ready for a nice hot summer.
