What is a house without a shrub or two. They dress up our home, make things appear more inviting, and help keep us happy. But too much vegetation around a house can be detrimental. How so?
First of all, trees can be an issue if they are too close to a house. The roots can grow and damage the foundation. The roots can also cause damage to underground sewer lines and would go unnoticed by the average homeowner. Then there are branches. Branches that overhang a roof can cause damage, moss, and encourage pest intrusion. Falling branches from trees during times when there is a lot of wind is also something to think about.
Then there are pests. All sorts of animals, insects (wood-destroying or otherwise) make plants their home. So if plants are touching or too close to your home – then your home is their home too….
As a general rule, you want to keep vegetation at least three feet from touching your home. Check with a qualified landscaper or arborist about trees – as the distance required depends on the specific tree’s root system.
